Health is largely a devolved matter in the UK. The looming 6-day junior doctors strike commencing 3rd January will put patient’s at serious risk.

The NHS marked its 75th anniversary on 5 July 2023, having been established in 1948 under the National Health Service Act 1946.

Issuing a statement on its anniversary, NHS England noted that it was the first “universal health system to be available to all, free at the point of delivery”. These principles also form part of the seven principles set out in the current NHS constitution, namely:

·         The NHS provides a comprehensive service, available to all.

·         Access to NHS services is based on clinical need, not an individual’s ability to pay.

·         The NHS aspires to the highest standards of excellence and professionalism.

·         The patient will be at the heart of everything the NHS does.

·         The NHS works across organisational boundaries.

·         The NHS is committed to providing best value for taxpayers’ money.

·         The NHS is accountable to the public, communities and patients that it serves.
