With so many reports of rising youth crime and antisocial behaviour, it’s worth asking — are we truly giving young people the tools they need to understand themselves and others? Academic learning is vital, but what about emotional and spiritual growth — those deeper parts of who we are that shape how we think, feel, and act?
When we talk about spirituality in education, we’re not talking about religion or doctrine. We’re talking about developing self-awareness, empathy, compassion, and a sense of purpose. These are the qualities that help young people make good choices, show kindness, and cope with life’s challenges in positive ways. Imagine classrooms and communities where children are encouraged to reflect, to listen, and to connect — with themselves, with others, and with the world around them. This kind of spiritual nurturing could help reduce the anger, hopelessness, and moral confusion that often lie behind the troubling headlines we see today.
If we truly want to see change in our society, we need to invest not only in education for the mind, but also in education for the heart and spirit. Perhaps that’s where true transformation begins.
